Longreach - Fishing

Chris is loving the travelling and meeting new people - the original "hav'a chat" - he regularly goes for a walk, or rides with the kids, and meets lots of other travellers and compares notes and tips. We had started chatting to a couple in a Wildcat fifth wheeler beside us over the last couple of days who were heading off in the morning. They brought over a container of worms and a bucket with small redclaws in it for us to use for fishing while we were here.

I have to say by the end of the day, I felt sorry for the redclaw - the boys had adopted them as there new pets. They pulled them out of the bucket, lined them up, measured them - then they would go back in the bucket.....only to be pulled out again ....lined up, measured and put back....and so on....and so on. All was good and having lots of fun until one of them bit Logan on the finger - he was not happy in the least and stopped playing with them for at least an hour!

Sunday morning, and the boys are still playing with the redclaw - they have even named them now. The small redclaw were called "Tiny" and the big ones were called........."Hairy" - bet you didn't expect that! Last night Logan woke up scared - he dreamt that the bucket the redclaw were in was in his bed, and it tipped over - and the redclaw were everywhere. He woke Jack up and told him about it and snuggled into bed with Jack for a while before returning to his bed. See.......if you train your kids properly, they don't wake you.....they wake their brother instead. What a great big brother Jack is!!

Later that afternoon Chris and the boys decided to go down to the river and see if they could catch any fish using their redclaw as bait. The boys headed down to the bridge and started fishing. It was just on dark when Lexie and I took some hot chocolate and biscuits down for the weary fisherman. Chris had decided he would show off - and show the boys how far he could cast the rod. So he gave it a big cast, with sinker and redclaw on the end. The boys watched it fly.....and fly.....and snap!!! The line broke and the sinker and redclaw kept flying - while we all cracked up laughing.

Even though they have hardly caught anything in their life - the two boys are as keen as mustard when it comes to fishing and crab pots. They are forever bugging Chris 'Can we throw the redclaw pots in Dad? Can we?". They always wear him down and they end up putting the pots in. This afternoon the boys headed off to check the pots, when not long after I hear "Mum! Mum!" being yelled across the paddock. I step outside to see what the commotion was just in time to see Logan and Jack stop and proudly announce "we caught one Mum!" they showed me the one lonely little redclaw in the bucket. Jack turned to Logan then and said "We'll call him hairy!" Lol

Over the next couple of days, the boys kept their pots in and kept checking them, hoping against hope that they might catch a heap. But it never did happen. Although.......one afternoon we all decided to head down to the river to check the pots. Jack pulled the first pot in.....no redclaw.....Lexie pulled the next pot in......yeah, one redclaw - cheers all round. It was then that Logan asked who brought the bucket? No one - that's how confident we were that we wouldn't catch any, we didn't even bring a bucket. So Lexie and I ran back to the van to grab a bucket. It was just as well that we went back to get the bucket....because....Logan pulled the third pot up and we all got a big surprise......no redclaw.....but a Yellowbelly fish! How it got in there we are not really sure - but we chucked him in the bucket and took him home to measure him and cook him up. Yum!!
