1770

7 May 2009

When leaving Bundaberg we had to empty the tanks on the van. Initially we had a bit of trouble finding the dump point, but eventually we found it. When we got there it was like a roundabout with swings in the middle. - so Chris decided that seeing as our van is American and the doors etc are on the other side to Australian vans, that the tank opening would be on the wrong side if we drove through the correct way - so we drove the wrong way around the round about. Great idea - except it didn't work. So we had to drive back out turn around and drive in again the correct way - if we hadn't given it any thought and just driven in it would have been right - oh well - we know for next time anyway.

I was really excited about seeing 1770 and Agnes Waters as I have heard about it a lot them. We hadn't really planned on going there - more of an on the spot decision. Originally it didn't look like we could get in but found a camp ground to take us, so off we headed.

The camp grounds looked great when we got there - but it was a bit of a worry as to whether or not we would get in as there were a lot of trees with low branches and narrow streets with tight corners. Chris got out and walked in to look at the site and decided we would make it - so we headed in with him driving and me walking around on the two-way radio directing him.

We decided we would take a drive and check out the town and what there was to see there - well let's just say that 10 minutes later we had seen all of 1770. It is a quiet, pretty town but mainly aimed at the tourists with lots of tours to Lady Musgrave Island.

The camping grounds were situated right beside the beach so we headed down to the water - and the boys were amazed at the soldier crabs. They were everywhere. Chris and the boys would dig them up and see how many they could find. The next morning the boys grabbed the bucket and headed to the beach to collect some soldier crabs - they must have spent 2 hours on the beach and came back with a bucket full - i don't know what they thought they were going to do with them but they had a ball catching them anyway.

Jack and Logan talked Chris into taking the boat out and putting in some crab pots to see if they could catch some mud crabs. The two boys are so keen that no sooner than returning from putting the pots out - they are wanting to go back out and check them. The boys did catch a couple of fish, a brim, dart and 2 crabs, but they were too small and had to be thrown back.
