We were up early Thursday morning to head off to Susie and Phil's (Chris's cousins) at Turkey Beach. I had been dreading hitching the van up for a few days now, because it is so much easier with the 2-way. Now I don't think I have previously mentioned that the 2-way has been working by it's own rules since we left home - sometimes working and sometimes not. It had now finally decided to pack it in completely - so after all our careful planning at home to set up the cameras and 2-way we were back to the basics - me yelling at Chris telling him which way to go!
To my surprise we hitched the van up with hardly any yelling. So after a quick stop in Calliope to empty the tanks, we were off to our next destination.
Susie and Phil live on a couple of acres about half an hour out of Gladstone - and were more than happy to have us camp on their front lawn for the night. The kids were excited because they had a few farm animals and they were hoping they would get to see them and help feed them. Lexie was instantly amazed by their dog, Lester. There is only one thing you can say about Lester - and that is - huge!! He was only 12 months old, as clumsy as anything, and had loads and loads of energy - pefect for the kids. Lexie fell in love with him straight away - even though he was nearly as tall as her.
Susie had yet to feed the animals this morning and asked if the kids would like to help - mmmmmm let's think about that one........YES!!! Off we walked down the back of the paddock, with three very excited kids and one huge, excited dog running between them. As we walked further into the paddock Logan saw the cows - after calling them for a bit - they started heading up towards us for a feed. Logan was stunned by the fact that they walked in a straight line behind each other - even though they had all the paddock to walk through - they had even worn a track in the paddock.
Jack and Logan enjoyed feeding the bread to the cows, but Lexie wasn't. She didn't want to get too close, so stood back holding the bread out to them, which they couldn't reach so she ended up throwing it to them. After the cows it was time to feed the pigs - anyone would have thought these pigs hadn't eaten for months they way the scoffed down the scraps. I do feel a bit sorry for them because they had to work for the food today - not only were the kids slow at throwing it over the fence, but they also decided it would be funny to drop the scraps on the pigs backs rather than on the ground.
Next stop on the farm was the chicken coop. Susie said the chickens could be let out - so they scattered as soon as the gate was opened and Jack went in to check for eggs - 2 farm fresh eggs. Jack and Logan then decided that the chickens needed to go back in the coop and started rounding them up - well you could imagine how that went. A dozen chickens running around crazy with two screaming boys trying to catch them - it didn't go well. In the end they were left out of their coop for a while.
The next morning we were heading off - but not before the kids ran down the paddock to feed all the animals again. As we were saying goodbye, Lexie was standing next to Lester, the giant dog, and giving him a cuddle goodbye. As she was cuddling him he leant against her, which knocked her to the ground onto her bum and then he lay down right across her legs. After laughing for a bit and taking a few photos, we tried to get Lester to move - but he had obviously taken a liking to Lexie and decided not to let her go. No amount of pushing and shoving could get him to move. In the end we had to drag Lexie out from under him - she thought it was all very funny.
