Jack and Chris went out in the boat again today - I am still amazed at how keen Jack is - he is always asking "can we go out in the boat Dad?" and sometimes he's still in his pyjamas! I think both the boys really enjoy the time with Chris - which is fine with Lexie and I 'cause we usually do girlie stuff - like paint our nails, do our hair or some cooking.
Today, Logan, Lexie and I set off in the truck to go and pick Chris and Jack up. Now the big thrill about going to the boat ramp is having to open and shut the cattle gate - I never realised it could be so much fun. The kids just about argue about whose turn it is to get out, open the gate, hold it open, shut it, run back and hop in the truck. I love it because it means I don't have to do it - Chris always had a rule that if there was a gate, the passenger had to open it - but of course it was never that easy with Chris, you would open it, he would drive through and then when you went to get back in the car - he would drive forward a little bit and then wait for you to try for the door handle again and move again. He thought it was always fun - but funny how I didn't.
Anyway back on track......After we drove through the cattle gate there would regularly be cows standing around close to the road/dirt track. The kids would hang their heads out the windows and talk to the cows "Mooooooooo" "Moooooooo" - Lexie especially enjoyed this and even said that a couple of the cows talked back to her - imagine that!!
The fisherman didn't catch any fish again on their latest expedition, but they did have a plan. They had spoken to other fisherman who had suggested that just on dusk was the best time to try and catch barra - so that was it - Jack and Dad were going to head back out just before sunset to catch their prize barra!
As the sun was starting to set we waved goodbye to the fisherman who were all set for a great evening of catching fish - they were rugged up, mozzie sprayed, torches charged and fingers crossed. A couple of days prior, we took a drive around to the dam wall and went into the kiosk at the caravan park and had a look, or should I say drool for Chris, at the photos of the barras that other people have caught. This only got them more excited about catching a barra.
Logan, Lexie and I did our usual routine back at the van of showers and dinner and it was just as I was serving dinner that I realised it was actually quite late and I was surprised the fisherman weren't home yet. Around here the sun was setting about 5.15pm, so they had been out quite a while and I was secretly hoping this was because they were catching lots of fish. It wasn't long after this that we saw them arrive back home - so we rushed outside excited about seeing their big catch. I could tell by the look on Chris's face that not only were there no fish, but something else had happened.
As Chris and Jack sat down dinner that they filled us in on their adventure. Not really being an expert on night fishing, Chris didn't realise that it is best when the moon is full, for a bit of light, and that it is also advisable to have a GPS to help you get home - Jack said he had never seen it so dark before and because the boat ramp was only a dirt track into the lake there was no way of seeing it in the dark. Jack started getting very worried and kept asking "are we lost Dad?" - Chris didn't want to frighten him too much so said "no we should be ok Jack", but was in fact getting quite worried himself. They did eventually find their way home much to Jack's relief
Jack then strongly suggested "We should never go fishing at night again, Dad".
