Elliott Heads - Part I

30.4.09

DEPART: Maryborough

Left Blanche and Glen's heading for Bundaberg. The plan was to check out the free camping site south of Bundy and if no good then head about 30km's south/east to a cheap caravan park. We were a bit worried when we started off as the road was really bumpy, and we were crossing our fingers that nothing ended up broken inside the van. Because we had only been on the road for a couple of days, we hadn't yet perfected everything inside yet, so we would often have things fall out of cupboards etc.

The road eventually got better and had a good trip in the end. The kids enjoyed seeing all the paddocks full of sugar cane and macadamia nut trees. They started a song "su-gar cane.....su-gar cane....su-gar cane....su-gar cane......you can probably guess how the rest went. It's probably hard to believe but the song became pretty repetitive pretty quickly, so we suggested that they sing something else (remembering that the stereo wasn't working which meant no music), so they started "mac-adamia nut trees......mac-adamia nut trees.....mac-adamia nut trees......!!!!! What have we got ourselves into?

We stopped at the free camping spot south of Bundaberg and decided that it was too far from town and there were no other campers there so we didn't feel safe (wouldn't want Dave to hear about us on the news!) so we headed to Elliott Heads Caravan Park.

We phoned a few different caravan parks in Bundaberg and were really surprised at how expensive they all were - Elliott Heads was a fair bit cheaper so we really didn't expect much from the park - but when we arrived we were amazed. It was a beautiful, quite, sleepy town right on the water. The park was really spacious with lovely green grass and you could walk to the water.

We had only just pulled into the park when we decided we had to stay more than one night - which was the plan. After speaking to the park, we booked for a week. We set up the van and walked down to the water. The water was so calm and clear that the kids ended up swimming in the clothes. We were amazed at how quite and relaxing the area was.
We used the 7 days then to relax and to get a bit more organised. On the trip here we heard a bump in the car - we weren't sure what it was and Jack thought he saw something fall - but wasn't sure. So we pulled over and checked the truck, van and boat. All looked good - so kept travelling.
It was only when Chris was setting up the boat that we realised what the bump on the roof had been. The small glove box in the boat had fallen open and the oil for the boat motor and the bungs for the boat fell out. So that meant a trip into Bundaberg for more oil and new bungs.
