Kuranda Skyrail / Train

On one of our many phone calls home, Mum had let us know that my aunty and uncle, Brian and Wendy, were in Cairns for a couple of days on holiday - so we contacted them to see if we could to catch up with them. They had planned on catching the Skyrail to Kuranda on Sunday - which we wanted to do at some stage - so we decided to drive to Cairns on Sunday morning and spend the day with them.

The kids were really excited to be seeing someone from home. When I asked Lexie if she remembered Wendy she said "yes, Charlee and I used to rub her feet!". My cousin Charlee, who is also 5, and Lexie used to rub Wendy's feet for her and that is how Lexie always remembers Wendy now - by her feet - sorry Wendy!! Anyway we were up early Sunday morning for the hour long drive into Cairns to meet up with them. The kids had a ball on the Skyrail - it takes about an hour on the Skyrail to get to Kuranda with a couple of stops on the way to look at the views, waterfalls etc.

On the way up Brian and Wendy started off in a carraige of their own, then Lexie decided she wanted to go with them on the next part of the ride. When we arrived at the end I how the trip was and Wendy said "gee - she doesn't stop talking does she?" Nope, that's our little chatterbox - she never stops.

The view was amazing, or so the kids and Chris tell me, I am not too good on things that just hang way up in the air by a tiny cable. The skyrail completely stopped at one stage - and I just about freaked - of course Chris wasn't helping by telling stories about how this always happens just before they break or he would start rocking the carraige. Even Jack was telling me "there's nothing to be afraid of Mum!" I was very pleased to reach the top and hop off!

We had a fun day walking around Kuranda, it really reminded us of Maleny - it had a similar feel with lots of markets with hand made crafts etc. We were catching the train back down into Cairns and arrived at the train station early so had time for a look around. I took the kids down to see the front of the train to see the engine carraige. When we got there we cound't actually get all the way because it was blocked off - so I told the kids to stand there and I will take their photo with the train behind them. The train drive must have seen us because just as I took the photo he did something to the engine that made a huge noise right beside the kids and they just about jumped out of their clothes!

The train ride home was fun - the boys had their heads out the window nearly all the time looking for tunnels and Lexie sat on Wendy's lap - off her lap - beside her - then back on her lap again - we were starting to think she had ants in her pants. She also talked all the way home again - Brian put out the challenge that she couldn't stop talking - she put up a good battle - she kept her mouth shut for a long time for her - we kept trying to make her talk - but it was Chris that eventually made her end her silence.

We all had a great day and enjoyed seeing Brian and Wendy for the day.
